REVIEW | Geometry Survivor

“Rogue-lite auto shooter where you fight wave after wave of enemies.”

After a few minutes of playing Geometry Survivor, I was hooked. It’s an auto shooter where the goal is to survive for 20 minutes while battling against waves of geometry ships. As you fight, you’ll collect credits and level up your weapons. Additionally, these credits can be used to permanently unlock new upgrades and purchase new ships. The game offers an intense and engaging experience!

Things I liked!

  • Gameplay | Geometry Survivor features really simple controls, allowing for one-handed gameplay to manoeuvre your ship. At the start, you wield a basic weapon that fires in the direction you’re facing every few seconds. As you engage in combat, destroyed enemies leave behind bright blue orbs. By collecting these orbs, you level up. Each time you level up, you’re presented with three random upgrade choices. These upgrades can be further enhanced up to four times. Additionally, gathering bright yellow orbs rewards you with credits. These credits serve multiple purposes. First, they allow you to purchase permanent upgrades, including more health hearts, increased movement speed, and improved credits earned in the shop from the main menu. Second, you can use these credits to buy new ships before embarking on each run. The primary objective in Geometry Survivor is to survive for 20 minutes. With each passing minute, the difficulty gradually ramps up. You begin the game with 3 hearts, and every time your ship takes a hit, you lose a heart. Lose them all, and it’s game over
  • Graphics | Geometry Survivor boasts an array of bright, vibrant colours that burst forth from the screen. Amidst the frenetic action, it’s impossible not to appreciate this visual spectacle. As you upgrade your weapons and survive longer, the colours continue to evolve, mirroring the dynamic changes in the enemies on screen. For the most immersive experience, I highly recommend playing in a darkened room, where the explosion of colours truly comes alive. The in-game screen layout is thoughtfully designed. Your ship’s level is displayed in the top left corner, while the number of remaining hearts is shown on the top right. With the game running in 4K ULTRA HD at a smooth 60 FPS, my playtime was seamless, devoid of any issues. Prepare for an adrenaline-fueled journey through a kaleidoscope of hues in Geometry Survivor!

  • Sound |   I love the music, which has a distinctly retro feel to it. It definitely enhances the gameplay in a positive way, especially when the game intensifies. Equally impressive are the sound effects: from the subtle beeping each time you level up a weapon, to the powerful roar of a full beam laser shooting from your ship. These sound effects perfectly complement the in-game music, creating an immersive and nostalgic experience.

Neither good nor bad

  • In-game shop | You do not earn enough credits from playing to spend at the shop, which makes it a lengthy grind when trying to unlock everything that is available.

Things I disliked!

  • Replayability | Unfortunately, Geometry Survivor only features one game mode called Survive. In this mode, your goal is to stay alive for 20 minutes. However, once you’ve achieved this, there is little incentive to continue playing. It would be great if the game offered additional modes, perhaps with varying time requirements for survival, to keep players engaged and add some competitiveness. Additionally, the absence of leaderboards, whether local or online, is a missed opportunity to compare scores and enhance the overall experience.

Conclusion

73/100 ⭐ I had a lot of fun playing Geometry Survivor and was immediately hooked from the start. The simple controls, clean visuals, and electronic retro soundtrack all contributed to the enjoyable experience. However, the limited availability of game modes is disappointing and does diminish the overall appeal of the game. Still, if you find yourself with a few spare minutes, Geometry Survivor is a great way to pass the time.
