Review | Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea

LifeisXbox’s Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea review | Earlier this year, developer Just For Games came out with their game Fantasy Friends, an adorable-looking game in which you have to take care of a bunch of animals. You see them being born, you get to feed them, you play with them, and so on. Even though this sounded like a cute (albeit children-focused) game, the execution of Fantasy Friends left some desires unfulfilled. Now, it looks like Fantasy Friends is getting a second chance to make this right, as Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea was released last month. Of course, we had to check out if some improvements were made to the game, so let’s see about that!

This is a short review, our usual the good, mixed and the bad was difficult because of the nature of this game. We played Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea for 1 hour on Nintendo Switch. This game is also available on PC and PlayStation 4.

I’m afraid I’m going to have to disappoint those who thought that Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea was going to be any different from the previous title. In fact, it’s exactly the same, except for the setting and animals. Now, we get watery creatures, decorations fit for under the sea, and so on. But at its core, the game remains exactly the same. In fact, I’ll walk you through the same points I wrote down in my previous review and we’ll see how things go, shall we?

First, the creatures. Yes, they are still as cute as ever and are about the only thing that is really interesting about the game. Then we have the gameplay, which is still as straightforward as before: you breed animals, keep the eggs warm, and after they’re hatched, you take care of them… forever? It’s still quite boring, simple, and involves a lot of waiting around. Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea remains repetitive and unrewarding, I’m afraid. Another problem with this game was the mana, which is very important (for example to buy new eggs and to purchase cute items) but not quickly regained. The customizations and decorations are still in place and are still adorable as hell, but again, serve no purpose except being cute.

And last but not least, the bugs that I encountered in the first Fantasy Friends game weren’t even fixed! The same bugs slipped into the second game, and that’s just the biggest flaw of this game, in my opinion. In my previous review, I mentioned that bugs appeared when playing with your pets, like the actual playing not working. I’m afraid that the very same bug was still present in Under The Sea, so I’m not sure how to take this game seriously at all.

40%

I already rated the previous Fantasy Friends pretty low (55%), but Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea is even worse as in: it doesn’t offer anything new and still has the same bugs in it. Maybe your children might enjoy this game, but pick between Fantasy Friends and Fantasy Friends: Under The Sea, because buying both is definitely a waste of money.
