Review | Deadly Days

LifeisXbox’s Deadly Days review | Deadly Days has some similarities with State of Decay. In both games you control survivors in a zombie-infested world, gathering resources in the hope to survive and escape. That’s where it ends though, as Deadly Days from developer Pixelsplit has strong rogue-lite elements, a fancy pixel-style look and you control your group of survivors by clicking on the top-down map. You will die countless times and that’s sorta the point. To make your next playthrough easier you will constantly unlock new stuff. Luckily for you reading our review for Deadly Days doesn’t require a visit from the Grim Reaper first, so let’s get started.

This is a short review, our usual the good, mixed and the bad was difficult because of the nature of this game. Reviewed on XXX | Review code provided by PR/publisher, this review is the personal opinion from the writer.

There’s not much story to be found in Deadly Days and that’s okay as the gameplay is a fun loop of doing things over and over again. It all started in humanity’s weak point, burgers. The meat that was used was infected with something and now we have to deal with a full-scale zombie apocalypse. To solve it the survivors have to take on different kinds of missions that get them a plethora of resources. Food to keep everyone alive, scrap to buy stuff, wrenches to build rooms and powerful weapons. Every once in a while a burger mission appears and here you can find clues on how to destroy the main source of zombie-making meat. Or you can also say fuck humanity and escape Earth with a rocket.

The constant routine of picking your short missions, gathering all the loot and reaching your base of operations again is repetitive but remains fun, even in long sessions. Characters and levels are randomly-generated, so you never know how things are going to turn out when you die and restart Deadly Days. Helping you with surviving the dangerous world are special abilities like airstrikes, healing clouds or drones that attack zombies. You’ll need it! Levels work with a day and night cycle, you always start when the sun is shining and a timer is slowly counting down till the night falls. You will want to gather as much of the resources before that happens as zombies become much more powerful and faster.

Deadly Days is a game with a simple concept but one that’s hard to quit. Constantly unlocking new items and trying to beat your best score has a typical ‘just one more before I stop’-feeling. Also worth mentioning are the visuals and audio, retro game lovers will be over the moon with this one. The pixel style really brings a unique atmosphere but it is the replayability that really makes it purchase worthy.

VERDICT
73 out of 100

Deadly Days is a game with high replayability. You’ll find it hard to lay down your controller as that ‘just-one-more’-feeling is strong. Nice visuals and enough randomly-generated content make this a great purchase!
