REVIEW | Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony

LifeisXbox’s Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony review | Crowalt is an old-school adventure game, with the gameplay being point and click with a minigame here and there to mix things up a little. You’re Hugh Radcliffe, a young adventurer in pursuit of the mystery of the Lost Colony, and nothing will stop you from learning about what happened to it or where it is. Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony is developed by Madcraft Studios and published by GrabTheGames.

Most Memorable Moment

The most memorable moment I had with Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony was finally discovering what happened to the Lost Colony right at the end of the game, I can’t go into details because it would ruin the experience for those interested in the game, but it was pretty cool and unexpected.

What we Liked!

  • Simple but good soundtrack | The soundtrack in Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony isn’t incredible, but it is pleasant to listen to. This game is made by only four people, so don’t expect it to have an orchestral or extremely high-quality soundtrack. With all that said, the soundtrack is nice and serves its purpose, it isn’t bad at all.
  • Mixing things up a little | There isn’t a lot to say about Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony‘s gameplay, it is a point-and-click adventure game after all. The good thing about it is that there are some minigames that do mix things up a little, otherwise, it wouldn’t be as interesting as it is. There are also 10 artifacts you can collect, they are nice to look at, but most of them aren’t required for achievements.

Mixed Feelings

  • A Flawed but compelling story | Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony has a pretty gripping story. The problem is that things tend to take a long time to progress as the game suffers from the same thing others from its genre do: it’s a giant fetch quest. Someone asks you to get them something, and you try to do it, but it ends up being a little more complicated than expected, so you’ll have to get something for someone else or even multiple people before being able to satisfy the original request. I feel like it could’ve been more compelling than it is, but I’m not 100% sure what could’ve been done differently in its place.
  • Simplistic looks | I wouldn’t usually say that simplistic-looking graphics are bad, and Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony‘s aren’t horrible, but they aren’t great either. The first thing that came to mind when I saw how this game looked were college projects a friend of mine did, as he studied game design in college and shared his projects with me. It’s somewhat weird to look at as it seems to be a middle ground between modern simplistic and old-school games limited by the technology at the time.

What we Disliked

  • More problematic than expected | To get it out of the way, let’s be clear, this isn’t one of the worst games I’ve ever seen, there were some problems, but I’ve seen plenty of worse games. I’ve had some annoyances, like clicking to go to a different area not working first try; trying to talk to one NPC in a specific part of the game not working; there are some spelling mistakes; whenever you pick up an item, or your journal gets updated, you have to wait for the notification to go away to be able to interact with anything, and I feel like the camera should either be zoomed out further or move faster in the bigger areas of the game as it makes the game slower than it should be.

Crowalt: Traces of the Lost Colony is a traditional point-and-click adventure, it does little to keep things interesting and different, but it does have some interesting things about it. I can’t recommend it to everyone, but if you’re into point-and-click adventures you may find this one interesting.
