I’m not a Trekkie, I watched Star Trek in varying incarnations while I was growing up and enjoyed it but I would say I am a casual viewer rather than a die hard fan. But that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the games, in fact Star Trek Voyager Elite force was a favourite of mine when I was younger. Why am I avoiding talking about Star Trek Legends… There’s no easy way to say this, it’s a mobile port and a very obvious one at that. Star Trek Legends is a game that did well on the Apple store so they decided to port it to other systems which isn’t a bad thing if done properly, but honestly nothing has changed other than button presses and even then it still relies on the Mobile layout. It’s very much a game meant to be enjoyed in short bursts and therefore doesn’t make the cut for me as a game I would want to play on console or even PC.
The game is a standard build your team and win new members via a gatcha style system, and yes while that can be fun to an extent, it can take ages to get to the stage where you are getting proper pulls and not just predetermined choices in order for the game to teach you the basics. Also it feels like your choices in characters doesn’t really matter, you just level up your favourites and let the game take over. Ok let’s get into the likes and dislikes.

Things I liked!
- Story | The story is somewhat interesting, Mixing many decades of Trek goodness into a coherent plot line which involves elements from the movie Star Trek Generations while adding a few twists and turns along the way. It gives you a real kind of who can I trust and what is the real danger kind of vibe. I also love the confusion of characters meeting star fleet members who in their day were supposed to be an enemy, it makes for a fun dynamic in the rather sparse interaction between the characters.
Mixed & disliked!
- The Battles | I enjoyed the battles at the start but as I continued to play I realised that it was just the same thing over and over, you even have the option of allowing the game to auto direct the battles while you sit back and have a cup of Tea, Earl Grey, Hot. There’s no real need to strategize as the enemy AI is lacking and the repetitiveness just gets annoying after a while.
- Sound design | If you like repetitive sounds and music to the point where you can hear it in your sleep then this just might be the game for you. Ok I might be exaggerating ever so slightly but there really isn’t anything special about the sound design in this game, you get your usual catalogue of Star Trek sound effects which are entertaining enough to start with but it’s just grating hearing the characters perform the same moves over and over again.
- Graphics | I understand that the game is a port but I think perhaps some updated graphics or even some new cut scenes would have been nice. As it stands it’s very much the mobile game it started off as with cartoony visuals that look decent enough but with just a hint of uncanny valley to some of the faces.
CONCLUSION
Score: 39/100 – I think if I was to play Star Trek Legends on my phone I might enjoy it more, but it is not a game I would recommend for a Console or PC Gamer. It’s badly ported and makes no pretence that it is anything other than a mobile game. If you are a fan of the franchises throughout the years there are plenty of games out there that can scratch that itch and a plethora of TV shows and movies. Let Star Trek Legends live in the Nexus and use your time playing something more worth your time and energy like Voyager Elite Force or Bridge Crew.
I’m just a tall bearded bald Scotsman who loves games of every type. I’m a voice actor as well and have been for a few years now. I have an odd sense of humour.
