I’m a sucker for a good roguelike adventure, especially the dungeon-crawling kind with a ton of weapons that can be synergised in interesting ways, like in The Binding of Isaac, Brotato, or even Vampire Survivors. You might think games like those would have run their course, but then along comes a new twist like God of Weapons. Mix those three into a pot, stir in some inventory-sorting mechanics, and you’ve got a fun experience that can easily keep you hooked for hours.

Things I liked!
- Weapons | The sheer number of weapons you can collect in this game is incredible, each one serves a purpose, and they all look cool as hell. You’ll occasionally come across a few game-breaking weapons, but that’s all part of the fun. And remember: what works brilliantly in one run might turn out to be a dud in the next. I’ve got a few personal favourites, but I’ll hold back so I don’t spoil the surprise for those who haven’t played it yet.
- Inventory | Any Resident Evil 4 fans around? If so, you’ll know exactly what I mean by inventory sorting, it was practically a minigame in itself, squeezing in resources just to survive the deadly Las Plagas… ahem. God of Weapons has a similar mechanic: your weapon chest has limited space, which you can expand and rearrange to accommodate more powerful gear and charms. It might take a wee bit of getting used to if you’re new to it, but you’ll soon get the hang of it. Just remember, bigger doesn’t always mean better.
- Unlockables | God of Weapons offers a wealth of content right from the start, along with a ton of unlockables to discover, from new weapons and potions to charms and a wide array of characters, each with their own variations. You won’t unlock it all any time soon, and that’s precisely what makes the game so much fun: there are countless goals to pursue, and chasing them is an absolute blast.
Mixed & disliked!
- Bugs | At the time of writing, a couple of bugs cropped up occasionally, such as the pause menu turning invisible or the life bar drifting off-screen for some reason. These didn’t occur often, thankfully, and I’m hopeful a fix will be released soon. On one rare occasion, the game crashed to the Xbox home screen without warning, but fortunately, you can resume from where you left off without any real issue.
- Limited Maps | I get that simplicity is key in games like this, but personally, I’d have liked a bit more variation in the floors beyond slightly bigger, slightly smaller, and the occasional trap, ad infinitum. Even a shift in colour palette would’ve been a welcome wee change. Then again, it’s hard to notice those things while you’re busy decimating bad guys with your overwhelming arsenal.

CONCLUSION
Score: 74/100
A great wee game that’ll keep roguelike Vampire Survivors fans occupied for hours, though it might not be to everyone’s taste. I personally had a lot of fun playing God of Weapons, and if those bugs get sorted, I reckon it’s something people will be playing for months to come.
I’m just a tall bearded bald Scotsman who loves games of every type. I’m a voice actor as well and have been for a few years now. I have an odd sense of humour.
