SWITCH 2 REVIEW | GRIDbeat!

SWITCH 2 REVIEW | GRIDbeat!

There is a certain kind of game that does not just ask you to play it, it makes you feel every second of it. GRIDbeat! is exactly that. From the moment I dropped into its neon lit cyber dungeon, it was clear this was not just about quick reactions or smart decisions. It was about rhythm, pressure, and keeping your cool when everything around you is trying to throw you off. Even before the gameplay kicked in, it was the visual identity that grabbed me. The bold, glowing cyber aesthetic stands out immediately and refuses to be ignored.

You begin in the aftermath of a massive digital heist, having broken into Knoss.OS and stolen data that instantly paints a target on your back. There is no victory lap. No breather. You are locked inside the system, hunted by aggressive security programs and hostile malware. The only way out is to stay in sync. Every move has to land on the beat. Miss it, and the system tightens around you fast.

That is the heart of GRIDbeat!. It creates a world where the soundtrack is not just background noise. It is the ruleset. Stay on rhythm and you carve through danger with confidence. Slip even slightly, and the tension spikes in an instant. It is stylish, intense, and far more immersive than I expected going in.

Now that the world is in place, it is time to step inside the grid and see how the game really plays.

Things I liked!

  • Gameplay | Gameplay is where GRIDbeat! really shines. Everything revolves around the rhythm, and once it clicks, it feels incredibly satisfying. Early on, you can take your time moving around the grid to the beat, learning the mechanics and finding your flow. As the difficulty ramps up, some levels have you chased by hostile malware, while others are structured like mazes with only one correct path forward. I hit the restart button more times than I can count, but finally clearing a tough level feels amazing.

Navigating the grid is more than timing. You deal with obstacles and puzzles, like hitting switches in the right direction or breaking through destructible coding barriers. Each level introduces something new, keeping the challenge fresh. You also have a health bar that drains whenever you move off‑beat, and some enemies fire projectiles that force you to dodge in time with the music. From the start, GRIDbeat! shows how seriously it takes rhythm. Wired headphones are recommended, and I agree, minimal delay makes a huge difference. Bluetooth players can adjust latency, and the HD Rumble helps you feel the beat as well as hear it.

The tutorial covers the basics, though it can feel a little overwhelming at first. This is also where my usual struggle with quick time events returned. During some hacks, a wheel spins around the screen and you need to hit the matching button at the exact moment it passes, which took me a while to adjust to. Since getting my Switch 2, my brain has been locked into the Xbox button layout, so I still found the button prompts tough at the start. After a while it clicked, and that is entirely on me for spending so much time with an Xbox controller.

After a few attempts, it suddenly clicked. That was the moment the game came alive for me. Everything fell into place, and I could finally move with the music instead of fighting it. From there, GRIDbeat! demands full focus. You cannot button mash. You have to listen, trust the rhythm, and commit. When it all lines up, it feels almost automatic, like your inputs and the soundtrack are working together. The tension is constant, and that push and pull kept me engaged throughout every run.
  • Music & Rhythm | The audio in GRIDbeat! grabbed me immediately, and it quickly became one of my favourite parts of the game. The soundtrack does not sit in the background, it drives every move you make. Staying in sync feels smooth and satisfying, while falling off the beat creates a harsh stutter that pushes you to refocus. The HD Rumble on the Switch works perfectly with the music, letting you feel the rhythm as well as hear it. Subtle cues for enemies and hazards blend into the soundtrack, so you start recognising patterns without even thinking about it.

Each level brings its own rhythm, and the shifts in tempo keep you adapting. Just when you think you have the timing mastered, the music changes and forces you to adjust on the fly. The variety in the soundtrack keeps the action dynamic, and finishing a level in perfect sync is genuinely satisfying. The music does not just support the gameplay, it becomes the gameplay, and that is what makes GRIDbeat! so memorable.

  • Visual Style | The visuals in GRIDbeat! grabbed me right away and never let go. The neon‑soaked cyber grid is instantly striking, with glowing enemies, hazards, and pathways that make the world feel alive. Every movement feels purposeful, and the way the grid reacts to your rhythm adds a satisfying sense of impact. Even when levels get more complex with maze-like layouts or destructible barriers, the design stays clear enough to read at a glance. If you miss a beat or fail a sequence, the grid darkens in a way that immediately tells you something is wrong, giving you quick feedback without breaking the flow.

The style gives the game a strong identity. Bright neon lines against darker backgrounds create a high‑tech, slightly dangerous atmosphere that fits perfectly with the tension of being hunted by malware. Animations, particle effects, and the pulsing environment all sync with the music, making the world feel reactive and alive. GRIDbeat!’s visuals are not just stylish, they support the gameplay, reinforce the rhythm, and make every level feel immersive and energetic.

  • Story | The story in GRIDbeat! is simple but effective, giving the action a clear sense of purpose. You begin by breaching Knoss.OS, the planet’s most fortified corporate network, and stealing a payload of priceless data. That heist leaves you trapped inside the system, hunted by rogue security protocols and aggressive malware. You’re not completely alone, though. Dot, the robot narrator who guides you through text, acts as a steady assistant throughout your run and adds a bit of personality to the otherwise cold network.

As you move through the grid, you can discover downloadable emails that act as optional collectibles. They add extra context to the world and hint at the corporate culture behind the network, encouraging exploration without slowing the pace. Most of the narrative comes through environmental cues, short messages, and brief cutscenes. Each sector of the network has its own identity, making the system feel larger and more alive. The plot isn’t complex, but it gives the challenges meaning and ties the whole experience together.

  • Performance on Switch 2 | GRIDbeat! runs very smoothly on the Switch 2 in both handheld and docked modes. I did not encounter any noticeable stutters or frame drops during my playthrough, even in the busier servers where the screen fills with hazards and effects. Load times are short, and the visuals remain sharp in handheld mode without losing any of the neon clarity that defines the game’s style. For a rhythm‑focused experience where timing is everything, the stable performance is a real positive.

  • Accessibility & Controls | GRIDbeat! offers a decent spread of accessibility options, even if a few modern staples are missing. You can choose from a small roster of male and female characters, and there are three difficulty settings: Chilled, Hacker and Boss Hacker. The lower modes give you much larger beat windows, which helps keep things manageable. There is also a handy control recalibration tool that is especially useful if you are playing with a Bluetooth headset and need to compensate for audio delay.

The core controls themselves are very simple. You move around the grid using either the left stick or the face buttons (Y, A, B, X), while the triggers and sticks handle your hacking actions. Quick time events also use the face buttons, so everything stays consistent and easy to learn. Because the layout is already so straightforward, the lack of full control remapping does not feel like a major loss.

On the settings side, you can tweak master, music and SFX volume, enable vibration and view the control layout. GRIDbeat! also supports nine different languages, making it accessible to a wider audience.

  • Replayability | GRIDbeat! offers a decent amount of replay value thanks to its scoring system, which lets you earn up to 100 percent completion on each level. Going back to perfect earlier levels can be surprisingly satisfying, especially once you have a better grasp of the mechanics.

You also have three modes to explore. The main game is the core experience, while Challenges lets you debug a collection of bonus levels, and Featured offers extra levels built around special guest soundtracks. Both of these side modes unlock as you progress through the campaign, and they add a nice bit of variety once you have finished the main story.

Mixed & disliked!

  • Challenge & Progression | GRIDbeat! doesn’t waste time easing you in. Those early stages feel pretty intense until the core mechanics click, but once they do the challenge settles into something genuinely satisfying and energising. Progression is split across “servers”, which essentially act like the game’s worlds in other dungeon crawlers, though each one looks and feels pretty similar overall. As you move deeper in, the difficulty curve really starts to spike. Later servers introduce multi‑layered stages that lean heavily on trial and error, and you’ll end up restarting some of them again and again as you try to piece together the right route. It’s not unfair, but it definitely slows the pace and asks for more patience than you might expect from its bright, bouncy presentation.

There were also moments where the game introduced too many new mechanics too quickly. It can feel a little overwhelming when several ideas stack on top of each other in the same server, especially when the difficulty is already climbing. Even with the three difficulty settings available, I feel the game could have gone a bit further here to make the learning curve more accessible for a wider range of players.
  • Clarity & Pacing | There were also a few moments where it was not immediately clear what I was meant to do. The game usually explains its mechanics well, but every now and then a new idea appears with very little guidance, which can lead to a bit of confusion on your first attempt. It is only a small complaint, yet it is worth mentioning because it adds to the occasional feeling of being overwhelmed during the tougher servers.
