REVIEW | Toodee and Topdee (Tidbit-style)

We love all sorts of games. Sometimes it is hard to cover a game in our traditional review style that’s why we have tidbit-style reviews. These shorter reviews cover games that deserve attention too but simply don’t fit our good, mixed, and bad template. In addition, they get a monthly summary article to give them even more reader attention!

If you ever watched Star Trek: The Next Generation you might remember an episode where another dimensional world has an influence on the Enterprise. Toodee and Topdee work similarly, both characters live on a different dimension. A top-down and 2D camera view. Each level requires a specific puzzle solution and the idea to solve them is brilliant. You have to think in the top-down and 2D view to overcome obstacles or survive boss encounters.

I would recommend playing Toodee and Topdee in the cooperation mode. It is much more fun playing it with a friend and you won’t have to deal with the annoyances of playing it alone. Having to quickly switch and using both character’s special moves is a bit confusing and the precision for some puzzle solutions is fairly high. Luckily levels are short so the frustration that comes from failing stays low. The colorful levels and the cute characters might give you the wrong impression. This game is no easy endeavor. You need a good understanding of the camera modes, and the puzzles are as spicy as a tasty pasta arrabbiata. Your thinking skills with gravity, quick actions with your controller, and accuracy will be put to the test.

New elements are added every so often. Which in turn means you are challenged to use your brain over and over again. At first glance, easy levels become difficult as enemies in the other dimension hunt for your friend. As soon as you switch you must be able to see the situation immediately, a skill that not everyone will have. So Toodoo and Topdee is definitely recommended for gamers who like to play more difficult 2D games or who like to be challenged to find solutions. The fact that you can do this with two players is also quite unique, although both players need some experience. So it’s not directly a game you can play with a young child or a person who rarely holds a controller.
