REVIEW | Sokobos

LifeisXbox’s Sokobos review | What do you get if you mix Sokoban and Greek mythology? Well, a brand new game from Daisy Games called Sokobos! After having positive experiences with their previous release, Dark Crypt, we were more than happy to tackle Daisy Games’ new game Sokobos. In their latest Sokoban-inspired game, you will have to move blocks around in order to complete a wide variety of challenging levels. The ultimate goal: build a new temple for the almighty Zeus. Patience will be the key to success and there will probably be a lot of trial and error. But let’s see what Sokobos offers!

What we Liked!

  • Greek story | I already mentioned in the intro but Sokobos is a sokoban game that introduces Greek tragedy in its story. In short, Sokobos is about building a new temple for Zeus. You took an oath and left your family behind to complete this task. Blessed with inhuman strength and a strong will, you set out to build this temple all by yourself. If you succeed in this task, the town you left behind will flourish once again and outshine even Athens! Still, this game tells the tale of a Greek tragedy so you can count on it that not everything will go according to plan. A simple but sufficient story that adds an extra dimension to a fun puzzle game.
  • Puzzles | In the game, you will need to complete a total of 60 levels by pushing blocks to their correct spot. But the fun doesn’t stop there since the levels are getting harder the further you get. This is due to the addition of extra steps that need to be done. For example, you will need to push a certain block through a spot of red paint to give it the correct color. When you progress further even more colors are added. Another one that I really liked was that you have to build bridges in their correct place so you can move over tiles that are blocked by electricity. If you add everything Sokobos offers, you get some challenging gameplay where you sometimes can get stuck for a long period of time, but that’s what makes the gameplay even more fun!
  • Looks & sound | By the looks of it, Sokobos might not be the most sparkling game with the best graphics and the flashiest cutscenes. But it doesn’t have to be. Sometimes it’s more valuable to stay minimalistic by giving a classic approach to a game. And Daisy Games managed to do so with this new title. The graphics in this game are good and practical and color-wise you can clearly tell the difference between every object. They even added 3 different colorblind support options; Trichromatic, Dichromatic & Monochromatic. If we are looking at the sound that is used in Sokobos, I can simply conclude that it matches the simplistic graphics. The game has a sound constantly playing that gives an ancient and mysterious vibe. This is complemented by some nice sound effects when you are moving around or pushing blocks.
  • Special features | Sokobos has some nice features that are definitely worth mentioning because they make this fun game even more enjoyable. First of all, there are leaderboards for every level. They are not time-based but move-based which, in my opinion, is amazing because you can see who completed the level in the least amount of moves so if you are not at the top you know there are ways to improve yourself. Another feature that is absolutely perfect is that you have unlimited undos. If you make a wrong step or push a block in the wrong direction you can hit a but to set you one step back, the best thing is that you can keep using this. And if you messed up big time you can even restart the whole level. But that’s not all! Of course, you have to complete one level in order to progress to the next but the developer added a button that if you are stuck you can skip it and progress to the next one. This is done because they rather want you to enjoy the game by skipping a level that you are stuck on than quitting because you can’t progress.
