Review Mittelborg: City Of Mages

LifeisXbox’s Mittelborg: City Of Mages review | Developed by Armatur Games and Published by Asterion Games, Mittelborg: City Of Mages is a fantasy strategy game. You are chosen to become Chancellor in Mittelborg, a city with a very special tree. The Tree Of Order is the balance of all existing powers in the universe and it will be up to you to defend it! Are you willing to accept this task?

We played Mittelborg: City Of Mages for 5 hours on PC. This game is also available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

What we liked!

  • Dying… But suddenly..?! | In Mittelborg: City of mages, you need to defend the Tree Of Order by defending your garrison and keeping your magical shield active. Each of these defenses has health, and when one of them hits 0, all other damage done to that will go straight to the Tree Of Order. You start your reign with 1 mage by your side. You can tell this mage to help defend with your other troops and, by doing so, giving that defense point extra defense. (So like +30% Physical def at the garrison and at the magical shield). But when you start the game, and I won’t sugar coat this; you are doomed to die. You have no buffs or anything that you need to actually make it. However, do not worry! You are immortal and can revive! And by doing so, you will keep certain buffs! I didn’t get this at first, but I read a guide to understand that dying was necessary, and I wasn’t the potato gamer I thought I was. After dying.. like 5 or 6 times, each taking quite some time, I finally made it to the end (20 rounds). This is not the end of the game, you will have to revive nonetheless, but it felt so freaking good to finally make it.
  • Brewin’ | You will need to brew many potions in Mittelborg: City Of Mages to actually make it to the end of the rounds. And I loved making them. Each round, there is an event happening, which can be: RED: Your garrison will be attacked. BLUE: your magical shield will be attacked. PURPLE: A gust of magical wind will blow by, and if you put your mages in the right structure, you’ll earn currency. Or, the one that is important for potions, YELLOW: A portal opens, and if you place a mage at the portal, you can travel to other worlds. In these other worlds, you can get scrolls that will help you choose random choice events or items that give you passive buffs or elements that you use to brew potions! Just waiting for that portal to open and then suddenly being able to make a few potions that could very well save your life is so satisfying!
  • Catching the drifts | As mentioned above, you need to catch magical winds by putting your mages on a special structure (which looks hella cool at level 3). In the beginning, they will only give 20 currencies. It isn’t much, but you will do anything to get more. This is where upgrading your structures comes in. You can upgrade each structure from level one to level three. Each level increases the number of mages you can put in the structure and the amount of currency you get from your windcatcher. At some point, I got over 300 in one go! And with all of that, you will upgrade all your other structures. So a little tip, upgrade the windcatcher first!

Somewhere between

  • Clicking intensifies | Mittelborg: City of mages involves a lot of clicking. And I mean a hell of a lot. I didn’t really mind this until I got three mages. I had to click and drag to where I wanted them every round. I was just wondering while doing that, why won’t you let me drag three at a time. Like if I were to click and drag my mouse over all three, it would pick them up and BAM, so much more convenient.

What we disliked

  • Tutorial | I mentioned above that I read a guide on this game. Yeah, that’s because, in my opinion, Mittelborg: City Of Mages doesn’t have the best tutorial. It gives you the basics, yes, but it doesn’t do much more than that. At the start, I had no idea what was going on even though I read everything in the tutorial. But after reading the guide, knowing that death is part of the game and you don’t lose everything, it all made much more sense. It also became a hell of a lot more fun to play, so if you are going to give this game a shot, I suggest giving it a chance until you completed your first run and feel like you understand what’s going on.

CONCLUSION

85%

If you really like laid-back strategy games, I can really recommend Mittelborg: City Of Mages. I never liked strategy games very much, but I loved this one. You do need to give the game some time until you understand everything and stop dying. But after that, it’s hella worth it.
