REVIEW | Gamrombo PS5/PC Controller

I recently got contacted by the team at Gamrombo, and they gave me the chance to check out the Gamrombo PS5/PC controller, so of course I said let’s do this. A few days later I got a knock at the door, and a simple brown box arrived. Inside was a very sleek-looking control pad with a set of instructions and a very short charging cable, and that was it. But really, what more do you need?

Gamrombo deals in more affordable peripherals for their customers, so putting it in a fancy box, I believe, would only add unneeded cost to the controller, so I can see where the mindset was for that; however, I do think there might be some purists or collectors out there who might argue that the box is part of the experience.

Anyway, moving on. Let’s get into the meat of the review.

Things I liked!

  • Aesthetics | As you can see from the images, this controller is gorgeous to look at, with a sleek black design and RGB lights, and of course the buttons have their own versions of the PlayStation glyphs, which look really cool to me. Plus, for those of you who want to play with it on PC, the glyphs are colour-coded to mimic Xbox buttons as well so that it’s a little less confusing. And if you aren’t feeling the colour scheme around the sticks, you can change it with the touch of a button, or perhaps you don’t want light at all? Well, you can easily turn off the RGB as well.

Everything on the controller is clearly marked and made to fit in with the bigger budget controllers, and it does it extremely well.
  • Tactility & Responsiveness | The Gamrombo PS5/PC controller feels good in your hands; it’s lightweight but still with enough of a heft so it doesn’t feel cheap and nasty. The buttons are responsive, and the thumbsticks just feel smooth to use. There is also a nice texture on the back of the controller which lets you keep your grip more easily.

Each button is easily accessible, and that includes the programmable macro ones on the back for those of you who need an edge in your gaming or maybe just need a quick way to hit those favourite special moves in Mortal Kombat.

The triggers and bumpers feel nice and firm so you know when you are pressing them, and the touchpad is smooth and responsive.
  • Audio | The audio jack on this controller does exactly as it is meant to; you plug in your headset, and boom, there is the sound from the game. It also accepts mic input as well, but the controller itself doesn’t have a built-in mic input, so you will have to use a headset with one attached.

The speaker on the controller works the same as a typical PS5 controller, giving you in-game sounds where the developers have added them, e.g., the ghost lady in The Evil Within 2, however it won’t work for PC games as this is just a PlayStation feature. Overall if you have a good set of headphones, it will work great.
  • Ease of use | I mainly used the GamRombo controller on my PC, and it was so simple to set up. All you need to do is enable Bluetooth on your PC and pair it once; that’s it. Every time you turn on the controller from then, it automatically pairs with your PC in seconds. Turning it on is easy too; just press the home button, and if you want it off, just hold the home button for a few seconds, and that is it.

The turbo button feature is simple too; click the button next to the home button on the left to turn it on and off, and if you want to change the lighting scheme, that one is on the right of the home button and vibrates to let you know it’s changed.

I personally never tried the macro features as I was too busy playing games and actually maybe forgot to test that function out, but then it’s not really something I believe everyone will use, so …

Mixed & disliked!

  • Nitpicks | I only have a couple of nitpicks for this controller, really, and the first is that there is no indication if the controller is fully charged or if it needs to be charged when you use it on PC. I think in future iterations it would be nice to have that functionality if you are using it on PC; even a small LED at the top which turns green just to say, ‘Hey, I’m done,’ would be nice.

Another small issue is the charging cable length. I mean, it’s great that you get one, but unless you have another cable nearby that has the length you need to play while wired, it’s not going to do the trick. But in saying that, it is a wireless controller, so it really would only be needed for when the charge runs out.

CONCLUSION

Score: 84/100

After testing the Gamrombo for a couple of weeks, I am still loving it; the fact it just feels so easy to use and fits in my hands just perfectly is something you need when gaming for hours on end. So if you are looking for a new controller with high-end quality feels but a lower budget cost, then I would recommend checking out the Gamrombo range on Amazon.
