Review | Danger Scavenger

LifeisXbox’s Danger Scavenger Review | Danger Scavenger looks to be a “shoot ’em up” hybrid mixed with dungeon crawler aspects from the good old days. Created by Piotr Wolk and published by Star Drifters, Danger Scavenger is fast-paced action, cyberpunk-themed, roguelike skyline crawler. Deadly efficient. Highly skilful. Invisible to indifferent citizens. They fight the greedy corporations that have entire nations under their thumb. Suits scornfully called them Scavengers. With 4 playable characters to choose from, Danger Scavenger does a great job at allowing you to choose the play style that you like and by guiding you gradually through the process.

I highly recommend starting with the all-rounder.

What we liked!

  • The Graphics | The biggest stand out about Danger Scavenger for me is the cell-shaded graphics style. They stand out amongst the crazy intense action and that’s a good thing. The craziest parts of the game are normally the boss battles, and whilst sometimes you can lose your character amongst the mess and crazy amount of bullets, it’s still a good way of highlighting your character.
  • The Multiple Routes | Amongst each level are 6 sub-levels and after wiping each enemy off of the map, you are presented with up to 3 ways to approach your next level. You may be faced with Elites, Lazers, grenades. The list goes on. Sometimes there is a workshop in the middle of the level which will allow you to craft new items during the game and use them in your defense and sometimes there is a hacking challenge that will continually spawn enemies until the hack is completed. It’s a good break in the pace and offers more variety to the fights.
  • The Music | The music is pretty good with the soundtrack mainly consisting of cyberpunk style music, sci-fi undertones with what can only be described as dubstep style tracks mixed in the loop when the action kicks in. I enjoyed the music especially when the action heats up.
  • Playable Characters | There are 4 playable characters in the game to choose from. You have the faster and leaner character who is good at maneuvering, you have the all-rounder who has adequate speed and attacks power, and you have the tank character who is slow but takes more damage and can last longer in battle, and the scientist type who has a low attack but good with buffs. It’s a great way of finding your play style but for new beginners, I highly recommend starting with the all-rounder.

Somewhere between

  • Too Short | The game is short. 6 stages separate you a boss level, and on completing the boss you are taken back to the workshop where you can then travel to another city. Then it is rinsed and repeated. In total there are 4 areas to complete and after completing them all you unlock a hardcore mode.
  • The Boss Fights | Not much to say in regards to the boss fights apart from the fact that they may be similar, yes, but they lack any form of variety in their attacks. It’s as simple as shoot and dodge, shoot and dodge until they are dead. I would have liked to have seen some more variety in the combat in this area given how long it takes to get to a boss in the first place.

What we disliked

  • No Online Co-op | The biggest disappointment for me was the lack of an online co-op. Games like this have traditionally always had some implementation of an online co-op. I believe the steam version has a remote play together option but even this was hit and miss from what I have read. If the devs intend to keep the player base on this going, a co-op mode is desperately needed.
  • Accessibility | I would have loved to have seen some colour options in the game as people who have a weakness in blue, red, or green will suffer here. Simple coding for Tritanope, Deutranope, and Protonope would mean that people with weaknesses to these colours which are heavily featured in the game would stand a chance and be able to play the game quite comfortably. Accessibility features in games these days are limited but it would be great if more indie studios stepped up and supported this and started leading the industry forward.

Overall, Danger Scavenger is a challenging game. At first, the enemies aren’t that tough, but as you progress, they’ll start to keep you on your toes. They may even start overwhelming you and forcing you to think more carefully about your actions so you don’t get yourself killed. I appreciate the challenge, but sometimes it gets a little rough. Even so, it’s still a lot of fun. The boss fights, mainly the ones I’ve encountered, are the bigger issue here. The variety is just lacking and they make for easy dispatch. The game also suffers from being short and I would have loved to have seen double the amount of areas here for this to stack up as being a more enjoyable game. The mechanics can sometimes be a little clunky as well and not immediately make sense, but all in all, if you are a fan of dungeon crawlers or twin-stick shooters, you may just find some things to like about the game.
