Preview | AirportSim

LifeisXbox’s AirportSim preview | Like many people, I’ve got a reasonably satiable curiosity for what makes things tick. Luckily, there’s a genre in games that scratches that itch. From trucks to farms or trains to construction sites, I got to take a look at the upcoming AirportSim and with a developer from Iceberg Interactive immerse myself as ground crew at one of four faithfully recreated airports around the world.

I was shown a bit of the scenario and Free Play modes during my hands-off demo of AirportSim. Before I knew it I found myself on the ground with a tablet listing a packed schedule, tasks that needed doing and a map to find where all the equipment was located. We quickly went to work and I was shown how to refuel and recharge the plane’s batteries. Some things I didn’t know were important here are to ground the plane while charging, or that the fuel intake of some planes is located on the bottom of its wings. While this was being shown off the level of detail on all the parts of the plane, ground crew machinery and the even airport building itself went quite deep. While this is to be desired of simulation games, it doesn’t stop leaving me impressed. What I was equally impressed by was the weather system. You can either leave the weather settings as is, and experience the weather as recorded by the METAR system (think an airport’s onsite weather people), or set it yourself using a variety of sliders. I don’t think these impact whether the planes leave or not, but they do a hell of a lot for immersion.

Last but not least we took a look at the luggage system. First, we had to locate where our flight’s suitcases dropped down the chute and load them onto the little train cars in a timely fashion. And as you’ve likely seen either from your plane window or online, you can really throw them around and handle things as roughly as you like. Even to the point where one will spring open and the items inside will fly everywhere, meaning you’ll have to pick it all up. We had a good laugh at the inclusion of details like this. Oh, and if you get AirportSim yourself, try scanning the QR code on some of the error screens that can appear all over the airport. You won’t have to wait overly long to do all this for yourself, as AirportSim gets pushed out to the runway that is release in Q4 of 2023 on Xbox Series X & S and PC.
