PC REVIEW | Box Knight

You spend your week as a regular corporate worker, but the second the clock hits 5:00 PM on Friday, you strap on your cardboard armor and transform into the protector of the office realm. Your goal is to fight your way through a dark, “toxic” workplace, clear out different departments floor by floor, hand out beers to your burnt-out coworkers, and smack the CEO in a grand final battle or die trying and do it all over again next week.

Developed by We Made A Thing Studio, Box Knight is a charming, stylish little action side scroller with a bunch of other features under the hood. So how does it stack up? Read on to find out more.

Things I liked!

• Charming Cartoon Vibe | It honestly feels like playing through a goofy, colorful cartoon you’d watch on a weekend. The silly animations paired with totally chaotic ragdoll physics mean every time you send a coworker flying, it lands with slapstick hilarity that fits the workplace comedy perfectly.

• High Difficulty Replay Value | Beating the final boss on your first attempt only unlocks the real game. The second run cranks the difficulty way up, throwing tougher enemy patterns and deadlier swarms at you, which gives the game awesome replayability if you’re looking for a serious challenge after mastering the basics.
  
  
• Co-op is a Great Feature | Since I got the chance to play the game early before it officially came out, I didn’t get to test the co-op mode myself. Still, having the option to team up with a friend to tackle the corporate chaos together is a fantastic feature to have.
  
  
• Customization Actually Matters | Dressing up your knight in cardboard gear and goofy outfits isn’t just for looks. The items you choose actually change your stats and abilities, which forces you to adjust your playstyle and makes every run feel totally unique. Every time you level up, you earn Skill Points (SP) to build out and customize your character’s skill tree. On top of that, buying new outfits from the shop gives you Prestige Points, which you can spend on extra passive buffs and cool bonus features outside the main skill tree.
  
  
• Enemy Variety | The enemy design in Box Knight is easily one of its standout features, cleverly twisting everyday workplace nightmares into ridiculous fantasy monsters. Instead of generic skeletons or goblins, you clear out floors filled with bizarre corporate tropes transformed This constant stream of silly, satirical enemy types keeps the humor fresh from department to department, doing a lot of heavy lifting to keep runs entertaining even when the office backgrounds start blending together.
  
  
• Great Price and Extra Modes | It is super cheap for a roguelike .Having two game modes also gives you nice options when you want to follow the Classic story mode or playing Horde Mode A survival style mode where you see how long you can last against waves of office workplace misery monsters. instead of a long climb up the tower.

Mixed & disliked!

• Super Basic Combat | The fighting gets repetitive after a while because your toolkit is so simple. You essentially only have a light attack and a heavy attack, so there are no deep combos, parries, or weapon skills to learn which can make combat feel like button mashing.

• Room Design | Because you’re trapped inside a corporate tower the whole time, the environments get old fast. After clearing out the first couple of departments, all the gray cubicles, breakrooms, and dull hallways completely blend together until everything looks virtually identical.

Box Knight isn’t going to blow you away with deep, tactical combat or mind bending level design, but it honestly doesn’t need to. It’s a silly, lighthearted, and genuinely funny roguelike that knows exactly what it wants to be. If you’re looking for an affordable, quick hit game to blow off some real world workplace stress after a long week especially if you bring a co-op buddy along for the ride it’s well worth it!
