Things I liked!

  • Pure NES Vibes | This game truly captures the spirit of a classic NES title. The pixel art is bright and colourful, and both characters and enemies move with that blocky, old-school charm that’s a joy to watch.
  • Authentic 8-Bit Sound | The music is catchy and evokes classic NES games. Sound effects, like jumping, shooting, and explosions, have that crunchy, retro vibe that brings back memories of blowing on cartridges to get them working.

  • NES-Smooth Controls | The controls are simple and feel spot-on, just like in classic NES games. Every button does what it should, and the game responds instantly when you move or attack. You’ll need to be careful with every jump and strike, because one small mistake can cost you a life. Timing and precision really matter here. It’s that old-school style where the game expects you to learn and improve, not just rush through.

  • Live-Action Laughs | The cutscenes are funny and exactly what you’d expect from the Angry Video Game Nerd. His jokes, reactions, and over-the-top rage moments are as sharp as ever. It genuinely feels like you’re watching one of his classic episodes, only this time, you’re inside the game. They also help break up the action between levels, giving you a quick laugh before diving back into the chaos. Seeing real live-action scenes with The Nerd himself is a welcome surprise, adding a personal and nostalgic touch to the experience.

Mixed & disliked!

  • NES Hard, Nerd Approved | This game is clearly made for hardcore AVGN fans and players who enjoy tough, old-school challenges. If you grew up with NES games and love that “rage and retry” feeling, you’ll probably get a kick out of it. It’s packed with inside jokes, references, and the kind of unfair moments that feel ripped straight from a 1980s cartridge. Be warned, this game might drive you crazy. It doesn’t hold your hand, and it doesn’t care if you die 20 times in the same spot. Enemies attack from angles you can’t prepare for, knock you into instant-death traps, and sometimes it feels like the game is laughing at you.
  • Designed to Drive You Mad | You’ll die a lot, and not always because you messed up. Some traps come out of nowhere with no warning, and enemies often respawn in awkward spots that make it impossible to react in time. At first, it’s funny, but after a while, it starts to wear you down. Some levels feel designed more to troll the player than to test their skill. You can jump perfectly and still get punished when an enemy suddenly appears mid-air or fires from off-screen.

  • Over Before It Begins | I understand this game is designed to feel like a classic NES title, so it’s not meant to be huge. But AVGN 8-Bit feels far too short. There are only six stages, each with a few parts, and the final level doesn’t introduce anything new, it just repeats what you’ve already played. Compared to the other AVGN games, this one wraps up too quickly. There’s nothing extra to do once you finish it: no collectibles, no secret levels, and no reason to replay. When it’s over, it’s simply over.

CONCLUSION

Score: 70/100

A short but fun and nostalgic game that captures the true spirit of the NES era, even if it occasionally makes you want to throw your controller.

AVGN 8-Bit is a love letter to old-school gamers and fans of the Angry Video Game Nerd. It perfectly channels the NES vibe with its pixel art, catchy music, and tough platforming. Every stage feels designed to test your patience and skill, just like the classic games of the late ’80s. Still, this game isn’t for everyone. The short playtime, lack of extra content, and high difficulty make it hard to recommend to casual players. But if you love The Nerd or enjoy classic retro challenges, this game will make you smile, rage, and laugh all at once.
