Hardware Review – NACON Revolution X Unlimited

I got the NACON Revolution X Unlimited to review. This will be my first review of a controller. I own a few controllers. I still have the Xbox Elite 1 controller and a couple of Xbox Elite 2 controllers, because they keep on breaking. The one I used the most is the Razor Wolverine Elite V3 Pro which I use a lot for shooter games. Every controller has its advantages and drawbacks, and we’ll be diving into what makes this one a good fit for you.

First, I want to give a little disclaimer. I received this controller as a review model, and it was clear it had already been extensively used by other reviewers. Maybe I should have contacted NACON for some minor issues with the controller, but these issues will not impact the overall conclusion, but I still want you to know how I experienced it. I thought I was missing the wireless dongle, so I couldn’t test this. (Later, I discovered that the dongle was to be found in the charge station!) Also, the battery was constantly discharged for some reason after a couple of days, so I needed to play wired and reprogram the controller with my profiles that I created and needed to perform a firmware update every time I wanted to configure the controller. This was a hassle. This meant I lost about 30 minutes before I could start playing a game.

You probably have seen a lot of unboxing videos of the controller. It’s straightforward, a nice box with a case inside where the controller is. There where a couple of fliers in it, but a little note about the wireless dongle would have been nice. I discarded the base station because I never use them. I might be the idiot here. My bad. Nonetheless, it’s a nice station with some weight to it, so it won’t move around when the cable is pulling down. But it’s always difficult to find a perfect location for such a base station.

A long USB-C cable is provided. If you game like I do on the couch, you can play perfectly with the cable. The cable plugs in nice and firm. No complaints on that part. What is also in the case is a little box with weights, thumbsticks and metal rings. I was surprised when I saw this. I was intrigued by it and will explain this a bit further.

After plugging the controller in to charge, I downloaded the NACON app on the Xbox. Because I wanted to see what you I could customise. Let me tell you: you can change a lot. The information on what you can change is a little overwhelming sometimes. I was able to create some profiles for the games I play the most. In my case I made profiles for PUBG and Zombie Army 4: Dead War.

Remember the metal rings? You can place them around your thumb stick. This helps you not to pull back so hard, when you try to control the recoil in the game when you are shooting. In the profile editor, you can select which rings you have placed. And it will adapt the profile to fit it. You can, of course, edit further and make it snappy. I went for the normal gamer, not the ultimate pro gamer. But still, when I played PUBG, I felt like I was cheating, it was such a breeze to control the recoil. I was really impressed by it. I never played better than with this controller. The profile editor is a bit fidgety at times. I guess if you edited it on a computer, it would be smoother than on the Xbox. You can also adjust the colours of the controller, allowing you to colour code your games or whatever you fancy.

Green is the only correct option though, right?

You can easily switch profiles just by using a button on the controller. Also, changing the audio settings for your mic and headset was easily done with this. I went to those menus briefly, and it is straightforward.

I enjoyed the ergonomics of the NACON Revolution X Unlimited. This is a layout that can’t go wrong. It’s a proven mold for a decade now. The only thing I found a little annoying were the back buttons. They are not 100% aligned for my hands. I have big hands, and the buttons were sensitive. So, I accidentally touched them by mistake. I didn’t check if you could address this. But it is a minor inconvenience. Once I started playing and adjusted my hand, it went better. Like every new controller, you need to adapt and play so you can get better.

One feature I really enjoyed was the weights. The controller itself is pretty light. You can add it if you want to. I ended up adding 10 grams to each side of the controller. This made the controller better for my hands, and I adjusted accordingly. It was also really easy to open, insert and close. In 2 minutes, you are playing again. For me, this was a lifesaver. I really like some weight in my hands.

The triggers are also adjustable on the controller itself. Full trigger or mouse-like buttons. I used the short mouse-like buttons. Because in a shooter, a long or a short trigger might be the difference between your enemy and your team winning. All the buttons on the controller felt nice. You noticed that they put some effort in creating this controller.

Conclusion

If you’re a serious shooter player with a competitive streak, this is the controller for you. I might be tempted to buy one for myself if my Razor dies. The short time that I had this controller, I enjoyed it a lot. Personally, I would like to see some minor modifications to it to make it even better, but I think you can’t go wrong buying the NACON Revolution X Unlimited
