Eyes on the Week (27th-31st July)

It’s time to look back on the week we’ve just had! What did the weekdays look like for our writers? What was the biggest news from the week? And what are we looking forward to playing during the upcoming weekend? Our Eyes on the Week article will answer all three of these questions! We’re curious about your opinion and played games, so be sure to share your stuff on our social media channels!

One game has taken up the majority of my gaming time this week, and no, it wasn’t Overwatch. Right now, Palworld has my undivided attention. Lewis and I have been exploring, progressing the main story, catching pals, upgrading our bases, and everything in between. Foxicle and Chillet are my favourites, with plenty of other pals catching my attention too. I believe we are approaching the final tower boss, but we still have plenty of content to experience. It’s an incredible game and one I think everyone should try at the very least.

I have also spent a small amount of time on my second playthrough of Quarantine Zone: The Last Check. I’m still a way from the end, but progress is progress. One achievement for feeding a caged infected didn’t unlock during the campaign, so I’ll need to play endless for that one when I get around to it.

Most interesting news of the week: Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is getting a sequel. A reminder for me to play the first!

Looking forward to playing: More Palworld.

I was informed of a nice surprise this week: one of my favourite indie games ever, Sizeable, just got ported to all consoles. Immediately bought it on Xbox and have been playing through it from scratch. It’s not a very long game, but it’s brilliant. You basically grow or shrink various objects to solve clever puzzles. Oh, and there are hidden turtles!

I’ve also made some progress in Denshattack! But somehow I have to keep forcing myself to return to it. One of those games I should love on paper, but somehow I don’t feel a strong pull.

I also made it halfway through Little Nightmares II. I reviewed the 3rd game, wasn’t too big of a fan, but I loved the first one enough to give this a go and complete the trilogy. It’s ehm… a very frustrating game. Sooooo much trial and error and dumb design choices. And I deeply miss the option to highlight objects you can interact with. It’s just no fun to try every object in the game just to see if this is the one way forward. I’ll push through to beat it, but it shouldn’t be so much of a hassle. Challenge can be fun; frustration isn’t.

Most interesting news of the week: I just heard Xbox consoles are spiking in price again. I mean, even a 500GB Series S will now cost €499, which is what I paid for my 1TB Series X at launch… It’s crazy.

Looking forward to playing: Completing the rest of sizeable and then I’ll have a go at Dispatch, which just launched on Xbox too.

This week I played more Marvel Rivals with friends, and instead of the usual Minecraft Dungeons, we played a bit of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered multiplayer, and we had fun with both.

I also am still playing through Junkster, and I’m sure that I’m closing in on its ending, and it has been quite a nice surprise for me so far. I’ve been replaying Batman: Arkham Origins, and having backwards compatibility and quick resume working on it is really nice, and it has been interesting reminding myself how the story goes.

Lastly, I’m still slowly playing The Great Ace Attorney: Chronicles on my Nintendo Switch, and it remains quite an intriguing game to play, though I’ll admit I followed a guide for a few parts of it.

Most interesting news of the week: Halo Campaign Evolved launched.

Looking forward to playing: More Batman Arkham Origins, Junkster, Marvel Rivals, Minecraft Dungeons, and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.

This week, I continued playing Star Ocean: The Second Story R on the Switch 2, and I’ve now rolled credits. It was a genuinely memorable adventure, with a compelling story, a fantastic cast of characters and an addictive combat system that kept me hooked throughout. I’d definitely like to revisit it at some point to experience the story from the other protagonist’s perspective, as it seems like there’s plenty more to discover. If you’d like to read my full thoughts, you can read my review [HERE]

I started playing Helix: Descent N Ascent, which Robby has spoken passionately about over the past two weeks, so I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. I’m playing the Switch 2 version, and its striking monochrome art style immediately stood out. It’s still early days, but I’m already enjoying its blend of exploration and environmental puzzles. I’ll be sharing my full thoughts in a review soon.

On Xbox, I’ve been playing even more Forza Horizon 6. While I’m still spending plenty of time exploring its open world, I’ve also been taking on more events and races. A few of the hidden Barn Finds have had me driving around in circles trying to track them down, but that’s all part of the fun. The game continues to impress with its breathtaking visuals and incredible audio, making every drive a joy.

Finally, I’ve spent a little time with Splatoon Raiders on the Switch 2, so far playing in handheld mode. The game makes great use of its gyro aiming, which still feels relatively new to me as I haven’t played many games that make use of it. Even so, aiming this way already feels intuitive and I’m sure it’ll become even more natural the more I play. I’m looking forward to spending more time with it over the coming weeks.

Most interesting news of the week: Gears of War: E-Day made a strong impression during last week’s multiplayer showcase, with The Coalition revealing Horde Siege, a return to classic Versus gameplay, and confirming there will be no battle pass.

Looking forward to playing: Helix: Descent N Ascent and Splatoon Raiders.
