Preview | Golf Party

Golf Party is a game currently in Early Access by VoidFiller Studios. It’s a golf game (obviously) that you can play with up to 20 players. It says it’s a one of a kind mini golf game offering various game modes. I got curious so let’s put this game to the test, shall we?

Pretty decent for an Early Access game

The gameplay itself in Golf Party is really fun. I always like playing minigolf in real life but didn’t own a game where I could enjoy it inside the comfort of my home. Now, I do and I’m glad it’s such a good looking game. It also features a very happy soundtrack that just makes you happy. The various maps are so cool to play in. My favorite? The volcanic one, for sure! Now, what really caught my attention when looking at the Steam page, is the Battle Royal mode that’s being designed. So far, it’s still a work in progress and people can’t play it yet, but I’m very excited about it already. When this game releases in full, I’ll be sure to play this game again and write up a review. More game modes will also be added, as well as mini-games and maps, so I’m really curious about those. The game is definitely still in its early stages, but it’s looking really good so far!

I also liked that you can collect coins, which you can use to buy hats and skins for your ball, as well as different trail colours. I think the hats were really cute, like putting a little duck on top of your ball, or giving it bunny ears, devil horns or even sunglasses, very adorable!

What I still miss in this game

I get it that the developers want to focus only on an online multiplayer experience, but I feel like a single-player mode against AIs is missing here. I often (more like always) found myself not being able to find any games to join, so I was left to host my own game without any opponents. I ended up finding people to play with on the Discord channel, but unfortunately, they were never available when I was. So, I never got to play with anyone else, and thus could not enjoy the actual purpose of the game.

Besides this, another thing that annoyed me a little was the amount of text in the ‘how to play’ menu. I think a short tutorial or something might be more efficient.

There are also still some bugs with the camera. Sometimes, following your golf ball doesn’t run very smoothly. I also experienced some difficulties when pointing my golf club, especially when my ball was close to a corner or close to the edges of the golf court.

Okay, but why add this?

If you want to get gems in the game, you need to pay with real money. When a game uses microtransactions, I’ll immediately be inclined to lean towards disliking the game. So, when I saw Golf Party had microtransactions in the Early Access version, I was a little disappointed. It’s such a fun game, but this really ruins it for me and makes me feel like the developers are out to make a quick buck rather than wanting to release a cool game.

In conclusion

Golf Party is a good looking and fun game, that’s for sure. I’m very excited to see what the future holds for this game since it’s already a pretty sick game right now. Unfortunately, the lack of players is a big problem right now, and I would not pay 12 bucks for a game I can’t play the way it’s intended to be played. I hope to see this change soon! I will, however, not get on board with the microtransactions, not now, not ever.
